Runaway

Runaway was one of Michael Crichton's early attempts at writing and directing. While it may not be remembered as one of his best films, it's a thoroughly enjoyable SciFi crime thriller -- and it has some of the coolest, heat seeking missile bullets ever seen on film!

Runaway is set in a future society where robots are now commonplace and seen in every home performing all the mundane daily tasks us humans are just too busy (or maybe it's lazy) to perform. Tom Selleck plays police officer Jack Ramsay, a cop who specializes in keeping these robots under control and hunting down the runaways.

Ramsay is paired up with new partner Karen Thompson (Cynthia Rhodes) and one of their first runaway calls involves a robot that has apparently gone homicidal -- at least that's what Ramsay thinks. Of course no one else on the police force believes him except his new partner and after some investigation of their own, they find out that Dr. Charles Luther (Gene Simmons) created this serial killer robot and that he has plans to make many more.

The performances in Runaway fit the movie perfectly. While they are all very one dimensional, it's the right dimension. Tom Selleck is understated, Cynthia Rhodes is supportive, and Gene Simmons is the perfect caricature of evil.

All of the gadgets and special effects are also well suited to this movie. Dr. Luther's spider robots are the perfect mechanical sidekicks to perform his dirty work and the heat seeking bullet missiles are some of the coolest weapons to come out of any science fiction movie. The way the camera shows the viewpoint as if you were inside the bullet chasing after your target is a pretty good special effect for any movie, especially one from 1984!

High art, Runaway is not. But that doesn't make it a bad movie. In fact, this is one of the better Science Fiction movies to come out of the 80's. If you're looking for an entertaining futuristic crime drama that is basically mindless, this is your ticket.
