Looker, another early 80's Science Fiction movie written and directed by Michael Crichton, reminds me so much of another one of his movies (Runaway) that I'm tempted to classify it as Runaway with models instead of robots -- which might not be too far from reality.
Albert Finney plays Dr. Larry Roberts, a well known Beverly Hills plastic surgeon who just happens to do a lot of work on models. When all of his beautiful patients start turning up dead shortly after he works on them, he gets suspicious. Larry enlists the help of one of his model patients / friends Cindy Fairmont (Susan Dey) to help him investigate the deaths.
Through his investigation, Larry discovers that a company called Digital Matrix is killing the models and replacing them with computer generated versions that have special "flashing eyes" that hypnotize people in an attempt to control their minds. Larry and Cindy must stop Digital Matrix and John Reston (James Coburn) before they can take control of everyone's mind and kill Larry and Cindy.
Looker is one of those movies that I can never watch all the way through in one sitting -- I just get bored. There are definitely some redeeming qualities -- Albert Finney is excellent as Dr. Roberts and the special effects are actually pretty good for the time period. But then there are some things that are just plain silly, like the "light gun" that basically puts anybody who sees the light coming from it into some kind of temporary coma. The scenes in the movie where this light gun are used are kind of cool but come on, a light gun?? All anyone has to do is wear some special sunglasses and the gun is useless! And why don't they just wear these special sunglasses all the time? It's all just kind of silly.
Overall, Looker is not a terrible movie. It's just that it's so slow and silly at points that I get bored. Besides, it reminds me so much of Runaway (a much better film in my opinion), that I would rather watch that than spend an hour and a half waiting for the few good scenes that are in Looker.
